On the eve of the NWJHL Regular Season I wanted to preview the season. This season will be one like non other and is guaranteed to be challenging to navigate. There will be roadblocks, but with the dedication of the six organizations, normality lies ahead.
I will be brining fans weekly articles, promoting the league, the franchises and players. Our league is full of passion from large and small communities, passion from coaches and players, passion from volunteers and fans. All of these pieces play an important roll in a normal Junior B season, no question it will be tested this year.
The NWJHL is entering its 28th season of play starting tomorrow night in both provinces. In Alberta the Navigators will host the Kings, while in Sexsmith the Vipers will host the Flyers. Over in BC the newly named Kodiaks will host the Huskies.
While all teams will be allowed to have fans, there are different criteria for fans to follow to be able to watch from rink side this year.
County of GP
Fans do not have to be double vaccinated or show proof of negative Rapid Test. Occupancy is set to 1/3 allowed. Masks are mandatory and physical distancing will be in place.
Dawson Creek
Fans must provide proof of single vaccination until October 23. Beginning October 24th fans must provide proof of being fully vaccinated. Masks are also Mandatory.
Fairview
Fans do not have to be double vaccinated or show proof of negative Rapid Test. Occupancy is set to 1/3 allowed. Masks are mandatory and physical distancing will be in place.
Fort St. John
Fans must provide proof of single vaccination until October 23. Beginning October 24th fans must provide proof of being fully vaccinated. Masks are also Mandatory.
Peace River
Fans must be singe vaccinated prior to September 10th or be double vaccinated. Fans can also enter with proof of negative rapid test not more than 72 hours prior to the event. Masks are also Mandatory.
Sexsmith
Fans do not have to be double vaccinated or show proof of negative Rapid Test. Occupancy set to 1/3 allowed. Masks are mandatory and physical distancing will be in place.
To be able to operate this year, the organizations must follow the PHO's set out by provincial and local governments. While we may not all agree on every regulation put in place, we must remind ourselves that these organizations are just doing the necessary things to operate. It does no good to take your frustration out on these volunteers that are in place to promote the game of hockey.
There are 93 days till Christmas day, but for hockey fans tomorrow is just as good. Let the season begin!
